Layover in Istanbul? Here's how to see the city in 8 hours

An 8-hour layover at Istanbul Airport (IST) is not a delay — it is a free city break in one of the world's great cities. Here is the exact itinerary our team has run, timed door-to-door, plus the paperwork and money questions answered.

First: can you leave the airport?

Many nationalities enter Türkiye visa-free or with an instant e-visa (apply online in minutes). Check your status before you fly — and remember you need at least 6 hours of layover to make leaving worthwhile. Under 6 hours? Take Turkish Airlines' free Touristanbul guided tour instead (bookable at the hotel desk in international arrivals) — they handle timing so you cannot miss your flight.

The hour-by-hour plan

Money: plan on ~600–900 lira (about $18–28) for transport, snacks and tea. Cards work almost everywhere, but small vendors prefer cash.

Three mistakes that end layover trips badly

Verdict

With 8 hours you can genuinely stand between two of the world's most famous buildings, drink tea over the Bosphorus and still board relaxed. Choose a FlightMatrix itinerary with a long IST connection on purpose — it is the best "free" excursion in aviation.
